Today is December 28th and 2011 is just about over.
I think the days around the new year have officially become my favorite days. I like closing things out and starting fresh, even if nothing actually changes between December 31st and January 1st. Some people I knew in college used to have new month parties where they would count down to the first day of the new month just like the rest of the world does for a new year and I always really liked that idea. New day, new month, new year, whatever. It’s all a fresh start.
There’s a lot I could say about 2011, but at the heart of it, this is a year that I started and ended happy. I think this is a first in my adult life, as things tend to come apart at one end or the other or there has been some kind of underlying anxiety creeping in. But it’s December and I have a job I like, some incredible friends, a family that just grew, a car that works and a house without roaches. I spent 171 days on the road this year in places like Chicago, New York, LA, Portland, San Antonio, Edinburgh, Memphis and Atlanta, and I’m still convinced I come home to the best city of all. I have a lot to be proud of and even more to be thankful for. No complaints here.
So here’s to 2011: Happy, content, thankful.
